T h e  M e a n i n g:

When a certain species of animal survives in an environment, 

because they have the traits that help them stay alive and reproduce.

While, the others that didn't have those traits die off.

Adaptation

To a d a p t means to make something suitable for a new purpose.

So, adaptation would mean when an animal can survive in an environment because of the changes that they have made in order to do so. The stick insect on to the left is an example of adaptation.
